The Influence of Skin Color on Heterosexual Black College Women’s Dating Beliefs.
Her research examines how gender shapes families and intimate relationships, with a focus on how broad societal changes make or limit space for changing gender norms in these contexts. Her recent book, The Mating Game: How Gender Still Shapes How We Date University of California Press , uses in-depth interviews with heterosexual and LGBTQ individuals to explore how people date and form romantic relationships in a cultural terrain marked by competing messages about gender, sexuality, and intimacy. Her other research projects include an investigation of LGBTQ hookup culture on college campuses and a comparison of how cis and trans men do emotional labor in their intimate relationships. She was recently awarded a Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline Grant by the American Sociological Association to start a new research project on how working-class men and women negotiate gender in their romantic relationships given rapidly shifting economic conditions. In addition to her research, Dr. Lamont regularly teaches courses on gender, families, and women, crime, and the justice system. Lamont, Ellen. Sociological Forum 33 4 :
Casual Sexual Scripts on the Screen: A Quantitative Content Analysis
While existing content analyses have provided insightful information in terms of contextual factors and frequency of sexual behaviors, not much is known about the relational context in which sexual depictions generally occur. The current study addresses this void by employing content analytic methods to measure the frequency and context of depictions of sexual behavior within nine popular television shows produced in the U.
The results suggest that, in the analyzed television shows, sexual behaviors within a casual sexual context were almost as frequently shown as sexual behaviors within a committed relationship context. Whereas sexual behaviors within a committed relationship context were mainly limited to passionate kissing, sexual behaviors within a casual sexual context mostly consisted of explicit portrayals of sexual intercourse.
This research found that the dating scripts discussed in Hussey’s videos are akin to those described in previous Pauline Hoebanx; Published ; Sociology.
Heterosexual women of a progressive bent often say they want equal partnerships with men. But dating is a different story entirely. The women I interviewed for a research project and book expected men to ask for, plan, and pay for dates; initiate sex; confirm the exclusivity of a relationship; and propose marriage. After setting all of those precedents, these women then wanted a marriage in which they shared the financial responsibilities, housework, and child care relatively equally.
Almost none of my interviewees saw these dating practices as a threat to their feminist credentials or to their desire for egalitarian marriages. But they were wrong. I was aware of the research that showed greater gains in gender equality at work than at home. Curious to explore some of the reasons behind these numbers, I spent the past several years talking with people about their dating lives and what they wanted from their marriages and partnerships. This was not a cross section of America, for certain, but I did expect to hear progressive views.
Most wanted equal partnerships where they could share both financial and family responsibilities. Read: What I learned about equal-partnerships by studying dual-income couples. Once these women were married, it was difficult to right the ship, so to speak.

The idea of sexual script brings a new metaphor and imagery for understanding human sexual activity as social and learned interactions. The concept was introduced by sociologists John H. Gagnon and William Simon in their book Sexual Conduct. It draws from a range of theories including symbolic interactionism , discourse theory and feminism. The theory of sexual scripting brings sociological, cultural, anthropological, historical and social psychological tools to the study of human sexualities.
Whereas human sexuality is usually seen as the province of the biologist and the clinician, scripting helps research and analysis to understand sexualities as less biological and more cultural, historical and social. Sexual scripting suggests the importance of meanings and symbols in human sexuality. According to Gagnon and Simon, scripts can be layered through three dimensions: ‘cultural scenarios’, ‘interpersonal scenarios’, and ‘intrapsychic scenarios’. Sexual feeling does not simply happen from within the body, but needs meanings and symbols which provide cues and clues to enable sexualities to develop.
Interpersonal scenarios are linked to encounters and interactions for example in rape, as illustrated in the early work of Stevi Jackson. And intra-psychic scenarios indicate the ways in which personal sexual ‘turn ons’ and imageries grow.
Gender differences in scripts for different types of dates
Suzanna Rose and Irene Frieze , who have studied men’s and women’s scripts for first dates, point out that the behaviors expected of men form the more rigid script. For this reason alone, men may dread asking women out or making mistakes, thus anticipating rejection more than they otherwise might. As noted earlier, men were traditionally expected to be the initiators, the planners, and the decision makers about dates.

The primary objective of this study was to determine whether males and females have different views about the partner behaviors that constitute positive, negative, and typical dating experiences. For good and typical dates, men and women identified many of the same events as likely to occur. However, sexually charged events were more salient for men in these contexts, as shown by the higher mean likelihood ratings men gave to items describing sexually suggestive partner behaviors.
For bad dates, there was a striking gender difference in the behaviors judged likely to occur. Women gave higher mean likelihood ratings to sexually charged events in bad dates. Furthermore, women incorporated sexually charged events in their scripts whereas men did not. These findings have implications for our understanding of how males and females view the development of sexual intimacy in dating. This is a preview of subscription content, log in to check access.
First dates are social phenomena of sexual selection. Successful mating depends not only on assortative mating, but also on interpersonal and situational factors that lead to a positive result in pre-mating encounters. To examine the factors that influence the success of pre-mating encounters, this study analyzes public texts on the success of first dates. Themes were identified in five accounts of ordinary people found online using keywords.

Think about your daily interactions with people. When you go to the store, for example, you follow a certain script—a series of steps—to interact with the cashier. These kinds of scripts are generally known by everyone within a culture when they are children, and they are intended to make social interactions easier.
